6 STEPS TO BECOMING A TRUCK DRIVER

Have you always wanted to start a career in truck driving, but you have no idea where to start? If your answer is a resounding yes, you are on the right page, as this blog can serve as the essential guide that will help you out as you embark on this new career path.

But First:

Before becoming a truck driver, you should keep in mind that you must have your green P to apply for your heavy licence.

If that is already settled, then here are steps to keep you guided as you start a career in truck driving.

6 Steps to Becoming a Truck Driver

Below are the basic six steps you should follow to set off your truck driving career to a good start.

1. Earn a driver’s licence.

A valid driver’s licence is required to work as a truck driver. To apply for a licence for various classes, you must first have a valid car licence.

To legally drive any vehicle, you must have a driver’s licence, which also applies to truck driving. And to ensure you pass, you can enrol at your local professional truck school, where they will offer a range of truck licence courses.

2. Get a Heavy Vehicle Licence

With your automobile driver’s licence alone, you cannot apply for an unrestricted licence. You must undergo a step-by-step procedure should you want to become a commercial truck driver.

To obtain a Light Rigid (LR) or Medium Rigid (MR) and heavy rigid (HR) Licence NSW, you should have your car licence for a minimum of one year. This guarantees sufficient driving experience before operating larger vehicles in Australia.

Last but not least, to obtain a Heavy Combination (HC) Licence NSW, you must hold your MR or HR licence for at least a year before you can apply for your HC licence, to be eligible you must also pass you heavy combination dkt (driver knowledge test).

3. Pass Your Medical Exam

For the licence class you are applying for, you must pass an eyesight test, a written exam, and a practical knowledge test.

If you have a medical condition or are taking medication, you must get medical permission from a state-level authority before attending the heavy vehicle training course. This ensures that you are physically and mentally capable of operating a truck on public highways.

4. Complete a Driver’s Training Course

You must study the official training course for the licence you need. If you want to get an HR licence, take an HR driving licence course and take an HR assessment test.

Verify your state rules before scheduling an on-road and off-road heavy vehicle licensing course with a local approved provider, especially if various states have varying course requirements.

5. Pass the Written and Practical Examinations

The last stage in becoming a truck driver in Australia is to complete the Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment with an RTO to obtain your heavy truck licence.

RTOs will perform all part of practical training, including the practical test.  Once passed, you will then receive your certificate of competence (CoC) result will be enter onto Transport for NSW system. To have your heavy vehicle licence endorsed, go to your service NSW centre to get your driver’s licence upgrade, you need to pay upgrading fee, and when you can comply with that, you are now eligible to drive trucks on public highways.
